Summary

Arab intellectuals and thinkers are confronting a crisis that reflects the broader political divisions emerging from the U.S.–Israel–Iran war, especially as developments intensify. While intellectuals typically seek to analyze political, social, and economic phenomena from multiple perspectives, anticipate their consequences, raise public awareness, and indirectly influence decision-makers, many today face accusations of bias, criticism for favoring one side over another, and charges that they are compromising their intellectual independence, despite the social, political, and ideological pressures that may constrain them and push them toward adopting a clear and decisive stance.

The current conflict has highlighted the vital role Arab intellectuals play in channeling public sentiment constructively during political disputes, fostering rational discourse in politics, media, and public debate, and thereby fulfilling their moral obligation to uphold humanitarian values amid the psychological and cyber warfare shaping today’s media landscape. Against this backdrop, the Middle East Council on Global Affairs convened an online roundtable to examine the crises facing Arab intellectuals in this complex environment and to better understand their role in defending human values and rationality amid war and division.
