Mahjoob Zweiri

Nonresident Senior Fellow

Bio

Mahjoob Zweiri is a nonresident senior fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs. He is a professor of contemporary politics and history of the Middle East at Qatar University, with a focus on Iran and the Gulf region.

Previously, Zweiri was the director of the Gulf Studies Center at Qatar University from 2018 until 2024. Prior to that, he was the head of the Humanities Department at Qatar University. Before joining the university, Zweiri was a senior researcher in Middle East politics and Iran at the Center for Strategic Studies, University of Jordan and before that, he was a research fellow and then a director of the Centre for Iranian Studies at the Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, Durham University.

Zweiri has authored more than 90 publications on Iran and contemporary Middle Eastern history and politics, Gulf studies, and the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and social sciences, among other topics. He is the founder and editor of the peer-reviewed Journal of Gulf Studies.

Zweiri is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Gulf International Forum, Washington D.C., and he is fluent in Farsi, together with Arabic and English.
