Bio

Mashael Al-Shammari was a junior visiting fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs. She is a recent graduate from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in Qatar with a master’s degree in history.

Al-Shammari’s research interests include women empowerment in sharia law, the origins of statehood in Islam, and the development of Islamic intellectual schools. At the Middle East Council, Al-Shammari is researching women’s economic and political empowerment in the state of Qatar.

Previously, Al-Shammari researched social movements through social media during an internship at Al Jazeera Center for Studies.
