Thursday, May 1, 2025

An educational workshop on the importance of clean energy and the energy transition successfully concluded on Wednesday. The event, titled Emerging Energy: Shaping the Future of Clean Power, brought together leading experts from the energy sector to explore cutting-edge innovations in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and discuss transformative solutions for a sustainable energy future.

During the one-day forum—organized by the Middle East Council on Global Affairs and co-hosted by Qatar Cool and Trident Investments Luxembourg—guests heard from a distinguished roster of international experts, including Dr. Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of the World Nuclear Association; Jacopo Buongiorno, Battelle Energy Alliance Professor of Nuclear Engineering at MIT; Chris Levesque, President and CEO of TerraPower, LLC; Andrew Champ, UK Country Director for GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy; Joe Jacobson, Senior Advisor at BWXT Advanced Technologies; Justin Friedman, Senior Advisor for Commercial Competitiveness in Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation; Dr. S. Duygu Sever Mehmetoglu, Non-resident Fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs; and Patrick Franz, Managing Partner of Trident Investments Luxembourg.

The forum provided key insights into the integration of clean energy technologies, such as SMRs within Qatar’s energy ecosystem. Crucially, the event emphasized that other energy sources will not replace oil and gas but complement and optimize their production through innovative energy solutions.

Speaking at the event, Patrick Franz, Managing Partner at Trident Investments Luxembourg, said: “We are proud to have played a part in organizing this forum, which highlighted the critical role of collaboration and innovation in advancing the global transition to clean energy. The discussions emphasized groundbreaking opportunities for countries worldwide to enhance their energy mix and optimize existing resources through advanced technologies, paving the way for a more sustainable future.”
