Inclusive Peacebuilding in MENA

The First Edition of U-Talk Series

April 28, 2025

About

Around the world, rising polarization, prolonged conflicts, and shrinking civic space are threatening peace and security. The exclusion of women, youth, and civil society from peace processes continues to undermine long-term stability, even as evidence shows that inclusive approaches lead to more durable outcomes. In the Middle East and North Africa, ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Yemen highlight the urgent need for inclusive, locally led peacebuilding.

To explore the role of inclusivity and education in peace efforts, the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, in partnership with UNESCO and Qatar Debate, is hosting the first edition of U-Talk. U-Talk is a public debate platform initiated by UNESCO, in collaboration with the United Nations and universities, designed to address and analyze key global issues. This inaugural event will examine how education can serve as a catalyst for inclusive peace by empowering marginalized groups particularly women, youth, and civil society to actively participate in shaping and sustaining peace processes.

The event will feature a keynote by H.E. Mr. Pekka Haavisto, Former Finnish Foreign Minister, followed by a panel discussion on the possibilities and challenges of inclusive peace processes.
