Since the Arab Spring, youth across the Middle East have used social media as a powerful tool to organize, mobilize, and claim ownership of regional narratives. Digital activism has become a defining marker of MENA’s political landscape, particularly for the region’s youth, who have been at the forefront of catalyzing change. Over the past two years, Palestinian youth have played a central role in documenting the humanitarian crisis and genocide in Gaza and countering mainstream media’s coverage of the war. In Sudan, young activists have led organizing efforts, shared real-time updates, and facilitated the provision of life-saving aid despite internet blackouts. In Syria, youth activists’ have exposed evidence of war crimes, supporting the institution and application of accountability mechanisms. Meanwhile in Lebanon, youth-led digital platforms are transforming political engagement—especially during crises—by offering comprehensive news coverage, investigative reporting, and alternative narratives. In the face of structural challenges and systemic barriers, young activists across the region have leveraged digital tools as a force for resistance, justice, and agency.
To amplify the voices of young activists driving change, the Middle East Council on Global Affairs will host a Suhoor gala featuring a panel discussion with MENA youth advocates. Representing perspectives from Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, and Syria, the panelists will examine digital activism’s essential role in driving resistance, advocacy, and mobilization in times of war and conflict. The panelists will explore key questions such as: how have young activists in Sudan, Syria, and Palestine leveraged digital platforms to empower regional communities? What unique challenges do young activists face in their efforts? How have youth led movements adapted to a changing global and regional landscape? What support systems are most crucial in sustaining youth efforts in times of war and conflict? Looking ahead, how do youth envision their role in the region’s future and how can the region achieve lasting peace and prosperity?
