The fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, marks a historic moment for Syria, presenting significant opportunities as well as several potential challenges for the country and the region. The end of more than 50 years of Assad family rule could pave the way for a new, more inclusive Syria. In this context, the Middle East Council on Global Affairs organized a diplomatic roundtable hosting Dr. Moaz Al-Khatib, Former President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces. Dr. Al-Khatib shared his insights on recent developments, prospects for peace and stability, and the evolving geopolitical landscape while also addressing the international community’s role in supporting Syria’s transition. The discussion which was attended by members of the diplomatic community in Doha as well as academics and experts explored key steps needed to ensure an inclusive and sustainable future.
